Our route is regarded by The National Geographic as one of Europe’s top ten coastal drives. Wind along the shores of Galway Bay into the unique “lunar” landscape of the Burren region. This is the only place on earth where Alpine, Arctic and Mediterranean wildlife flourish side by side.
We pass by Dunguire castle built in 1520. If you look out into the bay, there is a chance that you will see “Galway Hookers” at sail (traditional sailing boats influenced by ancient trade with Arabian nations).
We continue to a brief stop near “Black Head” where there are great views of the Aran Islands on clear days from the so- called “baby cliffs”. Enjoy a ramble around the surreal landscape here when the weather is fine. Instagram gold!
We arrive in the charming Atlantic fishing village of Doolin, where we enjoy one hour for lunch at leisure. You are welcome to bring a picnic if you wish, otherwise there are a selection of pubs and shops to choose from. O’Connor’s and FitzPatrick’s Pubs are usually popular choices.
The seafood chowder is really good, especially washed down with a creamy pint of Guinness and some soda bread! This village is famous as the spiritual home of traditional Irish music and is just up the road from Lisdoonvarna, known for the quirky annual match making festival.
