No journey to Ireland would be complete without an escape to the magic of Ireland’s northern coast. Our famous two-day Northern Coast, Belfast and Giant’s Causeway tour offers our guests a comprehensive tour of the region, led by expert local guides.
With a 9am departure from Dublin, we head north towards Belfast. Journey time to Belfast is approximately 2 hours, broken with a stop at the stunning early Christian settlement of ‘Monasterboice’ – famous for its 10th century round tower and hand-carved Celtic crosses which date back as far as the 9th century. On arrival into Belfast, we make our first stop at the world-famous ‘Titanic Experience’ (admission included).
The experience was opened to commemorate the one-hundred year anniversary of the Titanic’s voyage, in 2012. The museum will take you through the ship’s creation in Belfast, her historic departure and infamous sinking in the Northern Atlantic. You’ll feel like you have arrived on the set of James Cameron’s famous 1998 film ‘Titanic’, with some amazing reconstructions of the ship’s grand staircase and other features.
You’ll have plenty of free-time in Belfast city to explore Northern Ireland’s ‘capital’ and its colorful history. In Belfast, we highly recommend the ‘optional’ (£8.50) ‘Black taxi tour’ (a ‘Lonely Planet’ favorite), during which you will learn about the city’s intricate political history and how far Belfast has come in overcoming its troubles. Our expert local guide will provide you with recommendations for traditional pubs, fantastic food and further must-see sights in Belfast. Accommodation (economy and deluxe) is within the university district – a vibrant quarter filled with bars and entertainment.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before meeting your guide at 10am to continue your journey along Ireland’s northern coast, as we head for the Giant’s Causeway. During our stop at the historic town of Ballintoy, you’ll have the chance to cross the famous ‘Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge’, leading to ‘Carrick-a-Rede Island, which has been made famous during recent years as the location for ‘Game of Thrones’. Crossing over is optional (£6.50), and from either side you’ll enjoy stunning views – perhaps even as far as Scotland on a clear day!
Our next stop, the Giant’s Causeway, is a UNESCO world heritage site, where you’ll be mesmerized by the 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns – a result of volcanic eruption more than 60 million years ago. Entrance (£8.00) is included – make sure to stop by the state-of-the-art visitor center, where you will be given an audio guide taking you through the history of the rock formations as you wander through them. Our final stop is ‘Dunluce Castle’, where you can photograph the stunning cliff-top views and learn about the beautiful castle’s haunted history.
