Private-Glendalough-tour-from-dublin

A short introduction to the tour…

A memorable and enjoyable way to get a sense of the beauty and culture of rural Ireland – we are pleased to offer this exclusive, private tour of Kilkenny, Glendalough and the Wicklow countryside. Departing from the bustle of Dublin City – drive through Wicklow – the ‘Garden County’ of Ireland, en route to the ancient Christian settlement of Glendalough and on to Ireland’s medieval city of Kilkenny. Below is a taste of what you can expect from this private tour – all from the comfort of your own private vehicle and with the services of one of our expert driver- guides.

Recommended route:

09.00 Meet your driver – guide for the day at your Dublin hotel to begin your adventure. Enjoy a roughly 45-minute drive through Dublin’s leafy suburbs, into Co. Wicklow and to our first stop at beautiful Glendalough.

10.00 Arriving at Glendalough – you are sure to be blown away by the incredible views that surround you. Glendalough is an ancient monastic settlement, founded by St. Kevin in the early 6th Century. You’ll have approximately 90 minutes here to explore the early Christian crosses and round tower. Stroll by the lake, taking in the valley views and making sure to capture plenty of photos of this picturesque location.

11.30 Leaving Glendalough behind us, we’ll enjoy a relaxing drive through the Wicklow countryside – which may be familiar to fans of Hollywood hits ‘Braveheart’ and ‘P.S. I Love You’. Further on, as we enter Co. Carlow – perhaps stop to admire the Brownshill Dolmen ruins which date back over 6,000 years. This ancient tomb is believed to weigh more than 100 tonnes, making it the heaviest in Europe.

13.30 Arriving into Kilkenny – the medieval capital city of Ireland – it’s time to sample some local dishes (& perhaps of  pint of the famous Kilkenny red ale) as we break for lunch. Fuelled up, enjoy a stroll along the ancient streets of this city, which was established by the Normans following their invasion of Ireland in 1169 AD. You will have two and a half hours here in Kilkenny to explore the highlights, which include Kilkenny castle, the Black Abbey and St. Canice’s Cathedral. Of course, no visit to Kilkenny would be complete without a visit to the Smithwick’s brewery and a raised glass of the much-loved red ale!

15.10 We’ll depart Kilkenny taking the scenic route back towards Dublin city. Driving through the luxurious pastures of Co. Kilkenny – you are right in the heart of Irish hurling country. Listen in as your guide fills you in on the history of the world’s oldest field sport. Brought along with the Celts when they arrived into Ireland at the close of the last ice-age, Hurling has had a unique influence on the Irish culture and today remains as popular a sport as ever.

17.30 – 18.00 Arrive back into Dublin city center in plenty of time to freshen- up and enjoy the evening in our vibrant capital city. Your guide will drop you directly back to your Dublin hotel.
